Open-cell PU foam has interconnected cells that make it soft, flexible, and compressible — the right choice for cushioning, sound absorption, filtration, and packaging inserts that must conform to a product’s shape. Closed-cell foam traps gas in sealed cells, making it firmer, more buoyant, and more resistant to moisture — suited to gaskets, flotation, insulation, and structural applications. Most cushioning and protective-packaging applications our customers bring us call for open-cell polyurethane; the right answer depends on the load, environment, and life cycle your part will see.
Polyether PU resists moisture and microbial attack and stays flexible over time — the workhorse for cushioning and general fabrication. Polyester PU offers finer, more uniform cells, higher tensile strength, and better resistance to oils and solvents — often specified for gasketing, lamination, and technical applications. If your drawing doesn’t specify, we can help you select the chemistry that fits the application.
Polyurethane foam is specified primarily by density (weight per cubic foot — a measure of material content and durability) and ILD/IFD (indentation load deflection — a measure of firmness). The two are independent: a high-density foam can be soft, and a low-density foam can be firm. Density drives longevity and fatigue resistance; ILD drives feel and support.
